SPORTING.

Paphian, trained by A. McConnon, of Levin, led the fled home in the Trial Hack Plate at the Rangitikei Hunt meeting on Saturday. Riddenby C. Stratton, the Bezonian gelding got well away from the barrier, and was never headed. though Flying Nell ran him to within a head at the post. Messrs. Dwan Bros.’ stable was represented by Rose of Athens in the same race, hut the local representative, who started favourite, could get no nearer than third place. , ' Paphian’s time in the Trial Plate, 1.2 4-5, is a smart performance for the distance with 9st in the saddle. Utuwai, the once speedy son of San Fran, has probably seen the last of his racing days. A little time back Mr W. McKegg, of Shannon, presented the gelding to a soldier settler friend at Wangaehu, who is now iis•ing the ex-snrinter between the shafts of a milk cart. Cupfdon, one of R. J. Mason’s team, who are at nresent visiting Australia, marie its first appearance in the Novice Handicap at Tattersall’s meeting- at Sydney on Saturday, and won, cutting out the mile in 1.41. Owing to a cold, Gloaming did not start in his engagement at the meeting. Onipoto, winner of the Rangitikei Hunt Cup on Saturday, also accounted for the Egmont-Wanganui Hunt Cup Steeplechase at Hawera on August 31, for which he was sent out favourite. The imported horse, Arrowsmith, broke down at Trentham last week, and it is doubtful if he will stand training again. This is unfortunate), for Mr H. Brown, who has had bad. luck with Tractor having to be thrown out of training. Toddy, not unknown in these parts, won the Maiden Hunters’ Steeplechase at New Plymouth recently. This win is not before time, as Toddy’s oat bill must be a long way in arrears. Lady Polly, who ran third in the Maiden at the last Levin meeting, got dome in the Urenui Hack Handicap at New Plymouth last Saturday week, beating a big field. At Hawera, W. Pine has taken Inali in hand again, and the Stewards’ Handicap winner is looking well after her spell. The Otaki nominations have filled very well, and the Spring Meeting of this popular club looks like being a success. Vagabond, virho won the New Zealand Cup in 1919,' is spoken of as likely to have a say in the decision of this race in. November next. C. Stratton, the local horseman, is riding very well at present, and should get plenty of engagements this season. C. Brown, the Auckland horseman, had his first ride at New Plymouth after an interval of two years.

Nicomar fell during the running of the Rangitikei Hunt Cup on Saturday, his jockey, L. Berry, breaking his collarbone. F. Lind, a. well known horseman of a few years ago, mounted Nicomar and rode him home, getting third place.
