PATRIOTIC AFFAIRS.

MEETING OF HOROWHENUA ASSOCIATION. The quarterly meeting of the Ilorovvhenua County Patriotic Association was held on Wednesday afternoon. Present: Messrs. P. W. Goldsmith (chairman), W. J. Howell (Paraparaumu), W. Kilsby (Koputaroa), Howard Andrew (Manakau), R. McLean (Paraparaumu), A. McKay and J. Smith (Paekakariki), F. Plaster (Returned Soldiers’ Association), and Mrs T. F. Gibson (Shannon). The Manawatu Society informed the Association of an application for an advance it had received from a man who had only been In camp, for six weeks before the Armistice. The application was refused, the 'Manawatu Society pointing out the need of exercising care in such cases.—Received. The Executive Committee reported having granted assistance to a soldier oh behalf of the Hawke’s Bay Relief Association.—Action confirmed. The widow of a deceased soldier of this district wrote expressing nev heartfelt thanks to the Association lor its assistance to herself and family. Mr H. Nicolson, Otaki, thanked the Assocition for appointing him to the Association, but regretted his inabality to attend the meetings. He would be pleased to assist in any other way. It was decided that Mr Nicolson’s name be left on the list ol committeemen. The Public Trust office wrote, that it would be willing to forego certain formalities in regard to an estate in the Association’s district, where this action would be a benefit to tlie widow.—Received. It was decided to refer to the Pahiatua War Relief Association an application from Shannon for a grant by a soldier who was in bad health. An Obau soldier applied for a grant of £l2 to enable him to purchase a horse.—Granted, money to be refunded at the rate of £1 per month. An application from a Shannon soldier for a loan of £lO was granted, repayment to be made at the rate of £1 per month. The secretary was instructed to make, further inquiry and render assistance in the case of the wife of a soldier now in Masterton. The soldier enlisted in Levin, and the parties were now living apart, the wife being in bad health, and unable to do much for herself. The Executive Committee’s action in granting £2 per week for four weeks to a Shannon soldier who was in bad health, with a wife and child to support, was approved. Several loan repayment instalments were received from soldiers who had advances from the Association, also acknowledgments for the assistance the Association was rendering. It was decided to grant an ex-Te Horo soldier, now in Hawke’s Bay, assistance to the extent of £3 per week whilst he was in hospital, inquiry to be made as to whether a pension could be obtained for the wife. A loan of £IOO was granted a local soldier now in the Wairarapa, to he repad on the usual terms. A Walkanae soldier had his grant of £1 per week renewed for a further term of 13 weeks, the soldier being in bad health. It was decided to place on the list for consideration when funds were available, the application of a soldier for a loan.
