THE BEBBINGTON SHIELD.

The Bebbington Shield was presented* to the Management Committee of the Horowhenua Rugby . Union on Tuesday evening by the donor, Mr J. Bebbington, who expressed the hope that the competition for the shield would be keen and fought out in a true sporting spirit. The Shield was accepted on behalf of the Union by Mr J. W. Procter, who thanked Mr Bebbington for the valu- „ able gift and his interest in the game. The conditions under which the Shield will be competed for are as follow: (1) The Shield shall be known as the Bebbington Challenge Shield; (2) the first holders shall be the Horowhenua Rugby Football Union; (3) only the. following Rugby Football Unions shall have right of challenge, viz., the Horowhenua Union, ’the Manawatu Union, the Bush Union and the Rangitikei Union; (4) any of the above-named Unions may challenge holders (challenge to be in before .the Ist of June), and the match must be played on a date to be mutually agreed upon by the challenging Union and the Union 'holding the Shield; (5) all matches shall be played within the territory of the Union holding the * Shield for the time being; (6) challenge Shield matches shall be played in order of dates of challenges being received; (7) any Union sending a rep. team to play a Union who are the holders of the Shield may at any time before the -match commences declare the match to be a shield match notwithstanding no challenge having been sent; (8) the winner of a challenge Shield match shall then become the holders, and, shall be responsible that the win is recorded on the Shield; they shall also be -responsible for the Shield’s safe keeping, and that it is insured; (9) the home Union shall in every ca'se be entitled to the whole of the gate receipts. f
