SHANNON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
FORTNIGHTLY MEETING. The usual meeting of the Borough Council was held on Friday evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr \V. Murdoch) and Crs. Gardner, Richardson, Spencer, Butt, Hook, Hyde and Murray. The Horowhenua County Council wrote in reply to the inquiry re cartage of metal by the county on the Shannon borough roads. The matter was considered at the last meeting of the County Council, and it-was decided to leave the matter in the hands of Cr. Barber and the County Engineer to meet the Shannon Council. The Mayor stated that Stout Street was being cut up by the heavy traffic. Cr. Richardson asked whether the Council could not stop heavy traffic on any particular street, and it was pointed out that the Public Works Department lorries were not sticking to their bargain by using specified streets for their lorries. The Mayor stated that he had communicated'with Mr Dinnie, the Chief Engineer, who said that the Department’s drivers had .been, repeatedly notified about using the streets as agreed to with .the Council. Cr. Spencer asked if a notice posted at the works notifying the drivers would not have a good effect? The Mayor said At might, but he moved that the Department’s attention be called to non-observance of the agreement entered into between the Council Slid the Public Works Department regarding the use of Grey Street by the Department’s lorries, and asked tiidt the agreement be adhered to in future. The motion was carried. . The Minister of Public Works wrote in reply to the Council stating that inquiry was being made re the granting of a subsidy ‘ for the' maintenance of a doctor in Shannon.—Received. Dr. Faris, medical health officer, wrote stating that at the request of the Council he had made an inspection, in company with members of the Health Committee, of certain premises in the'town. It was decided with the owner of the Maoriland Theatre to have improvements (carried out in connection withrthe lavatory accommodation of the theatre. The premises at the rear of the co-opera-tive store were untidy, . and all tins and rubbish should be removed. The urinal at the rear-of Hook’s billiard saloon required * a Tittle attention. It was decided that the owners of premises referred to be notified accordingly. -• The Valuation Department, Wellington, asked for* particulars necessary to the payment of the rate subsidy Particulars to be supplied. Messrs. Turnbull and Jones," electrical engineers, inquired when it would be suitable to visit Shannon to confer with the Council and Borough engineer in reference to the electrical lighting of Shannon.—Left in the hands of Cr. Fargher, chairman -of the Lightihg Committee, to arrange" a' conference with Borough Engineer, Lighting Committee and Turnbull 1 aiid Jobe's’ representative. ROADS COMMITTEE’S REPORT. The Roads 'Committee reported •as fOlIOWS!*--’ : ’*■ - The Health Officer, together with the Committee, visited Mr Williams’ premises re the sanitary conditions, existing. The Health Officer is reporting to the Council: The Committee also the back premises and right-of-way at the rear of shops off BaHance Street; We suggest this be put in : order by clearing grass from edges and remetalling. This also ‘applies 4cr' condition existin front of in Pliramer Terrace. • '•* -
The Committee inspected the School with the view to complying with request for culvert. ' On-viewing this, 1 we find water channel conveys the water from each side in opposite directions. We fail to see the necessity for a Culvert, and suggest the required amount of riietal be put'on to improve thef 'thoroughfare. • Re the request of a light for- sanitary contractor. We' attended to this matter by instructing ~ Mr Grumwold to make a light, according to the description set out ; by him. which proved very satisfactory,* and to cost 30s to 35s.—Advised-VMf McPherson to this effect.

The Committee viewed things generally, and together with the dressing and napping of metal on East Road, advise attending-.to* Stafford Street, which needs a few more loads of metal and 'dressing. We also consider the cleaning r out of practically-all our water channels, the : setting out of water channelling .* on frontage of Plimmer Terrace; and the 'attention necessary to Nathan Terrace and grading road from edges. We would suggest the services'of an extra road *
man be procured, to have any chance of coping with this work.
Bridge on Main . Road, Margaret Street: Have now completed this work, which has the appearance of coping with the; traffic imposed on it, and have instructed the foreman to carefully watch this for at least a fortnight, to' consolidate the approaches and''centre with -metal and take up any slackness which may take place fn the new wheel-tracks.
It was decided that the various owners .abutting on Ballance Street be notified to put right-of-way in order. The Road Committee’s report in reference to the crossing at the School was adopted. As regards the engagement of an additional roadman, it was decided to call a meeting of the Finance Committee to consider the financial: position before undertaking this liability*
