Just before reaching the Waiohanga bridge the car ran into a deep rut and got out of control. The car ran over the side and fell to the bottom, landing in a patch of scrub and grass. It was ■ noticed by a passer-by, bottom up, and on investigation it was seen that Miss Hemingway had been thrown clear, hut the other occupants were found under the car. Mr Joplin was not hurt, but his sister had sustained serious injuries. She was removed to the Otaki Hospital. where it was found that both collar-bones were broken, she had an abrasion on the head, and was badly shaken and bruised. The party bad a fortunate escape, as the mishap occurred at the highest part of the cliff, which falls practically sheer for nearly 100 feet.
