The Shannon Footbali Club's dance tpkes place in the Druids’ Hall this evening. It is expected that the Shannon Dairy Company’s output for the present season will show a substantial increase over that of the previous year. A scheme for a high-pressure water supply for Shannon is being prepared by Mr R. Edwards, the borough en gineer. The proposed source of supply will be the Otauru stream. Good progress has been made with the erectidn of the new infants’ department at the Shannon School, and it is expected that the rooms will be handed over by the builders in a. few weeks’ time. The milk supply to the Shannon factory has fallen to a low level just now, but il is expected that the intake will be sufficient to warrant operations being carried right through the whiter. A local fiaxmiller informed a News reporter yesterday that he had received a large number of letters from outside the district inquiring what the prospects of work were when his mills* re-opened.

A sale of travellers’ samples, comprising ladies’ apparel, is announced to take place in Bradcock’s Rooms. Plirmner Terrace, during the next few days. The quick purchasers will get the bargains. Mr R. Edwards, engineer to the Shannon Borough Council, was in Shannon yesterday inspecting Stout, Ballance, Vance and Grey Streets with a view to preparing estimates for improvements in compliance with a resolution of the Council. A ballot, was taken at the Miranui mill on Sunday on the proposal of the millers that there should be a reduction in wo,ges in view of the condition of the hemp industry. A Makerua settler informed a News representative yesterday that the willow weed, although very prevalent in swampy country, is not difficult to deal with. If the ground is ploughed and sown, and a good take of grass follows, the weed will give no trouble, but soon takes possession of any bare unoccupied ground. The weed having a bitter taste is unpalatable for stock.

The Mayor (Mr W. Murdoch) has received the following letter of thanks from the Willard Home board of management, which speaks for itself: “The Board wishes to thank you very heartily for the liberal way in which Shannon responded to our appeal for help on behalf of the Home. The j.umble sale was a financial success, £BO being realised on the sales. With your generous donations and others, we hope to make £IOO clear of expenses. 'We leave it to you to kindly thank all those who assisted in any way, and we hope the great need for the extension of the Home will not be forgotten by the Shannon people.”

At the annual meeting of the Levin branch of the Farmers’ Union on Saturday, Mr W. G. Adkin, speaking as a wool grower, drew attention to. what he termed was misleading information that was being supplied to the press in regard to the wool sale reports. He referred to the recent Napier sales as an instance. Many of these reports were painted in rosy colours, and gave a wrong impression of the true state of things. He knew for a fact that some of the wool about which such glowing accounts were given was sold at less than it cost to produce. The effect of these reports was to encourage the Government to continue with its expensive administrative departments instead of resorting to every means of economy in view of the present situation. The cost of upkeep of this top hamper was raised largely from the broad acres of the fa v m--r. The country had to foot the bill to keep the city in luxury.

At Saturday’s meeting of farmers. Mr W. H. Field, M.P:, sugges'ed that ‘he Union needed skilful organisation. If they could get a man of magnetic personality, an impressive speaker and an able organiser, a great deal could be done to unite ‘the fanners. Mr Poison, the chief speaker, said he was absolutely sure that success would follow. In the Wairarapa they ha<f such a man in Mr Hebentcn. whom he wished could be divided into sections and sent round New Zealand. Mr Field said He had a man of that sort in mind who had subsequently taken lip organisation in connection with labour—(Oh! Oh!) —he did not say the Labour Party. Mr Poison asked to be put in touch with the organiser referred to, as that was the sort of man they were looking for.
