TRAFFIC ON SHANNON ROADS.

BOROUGH COUNCIL PROTESTS. The Town Clerk, Shannon Borough ’ Council, wrote the Horowhenua County Council at Saturday’s meeting, as follows: The present work on the roads in the district outside the borough of Shannon under the orders of your Council necessitates the metal being carried over the borough roads. The vehicle used by your Council or its contractor carries a load of some three cubic yards or more. The Borough Council is informed that it is intended that something like 2000 loads is to be carried. This means that this heavy load traverses a mile or thereabouts of our roads, each journey. The damage accruing must be considerable. The Borough Council would like to know what compensation your Council is prepared to make? The Borough Council is well aware that the work is of much benefit to all, but is unable to bear the whole strain of the loss in repairing its roads after the work' Is finished,, and keeping them in repair in the meantime.

The chairman (Cr. Monk) stated that | he had met the Mayor of Shannon on, Thursday last, and they had discussed the matter. He (the speaker) contended that the Council had never refused to. do fair repair work for any other local body, but he did think that the Shannon borough had acted a little arbitrarily in ordering the county lorry off one road when others were running over the road- The Council •only had one lorry on the road, whilst the Public Works Department had three or four. “We are not going off the road,” stated the chairman,: “and that ends the matter:” He moved, and Cr. Ryder seconded, that Cr. Barber and the Engineer interview the Mayor of Shannon and endeavour to come to a settlement.
