AUSTRALIAN NOTES,

;Peb Electric Telegraph—Copyright.)

[Per Press Association.]

(Received 0,40 p.m., Maroh let.) Melbourne, March 1.

St. Hippo’s withdrawal was caused by bis striking himself a few days ago, and not recovering quickly enough his owner decided to scratch him rather than risk the chance of a permanent breakdown. No work was done on the training track this morning. Betting was completely stagnant yesterday. The latest prices offered for the Newmarket Handicap are—loo to 12 against Warpaint, 100 to 9 against Bungebah and Buccleuch, ICO to 8 against Wild Bose aud Malolo, 100 to 5 against Hero, Bevgrley, All There, Sprig o’ Myrtle, Linburn, Chatham, Fortnnatus, and Bavenswing, 100 to 4 against Lord Hopetoun, Ascot Yale, Omaha, The Harbor Light, Miss Albans, and Sainfoin. Australian Cup Camoola, 100 to 14 against The Admiral and Malvolio, 100 to 12 against Sternchaser, 100 to 8 against Qlenloth, Fortsea and Newman.

At Caulfield yesterday Mies Albans covered six furlongs in Imin 18$sec. Sternohaser, with White up, did the two miles comfortably in Smin 50aec.

(Received 10.10 p.m., March Ist.) The betting market is dull. A disposition is evinced to knock Warpaint back for the Newmarket Handicap, 100 to 30 against being offered, but when this was accepted 100 to ll' against was the best price. 2000 to 100 was taken about Hero, and also several hundreds about All There at 100 to 5 against, and the Swell at 100 to 3 against. Bedleap has been scratched for all engagements at the meeting. Gaillardia executed a great trial prior to leaving Queensciiffe, where Zeph and Queenie are displaying excellent form.
