Collision.
(Bv Tbliobaph.)
CHRISTCHURCH, Fee. 28.
A collision occurred this afternoon in Lyttelton harbour. The Bimutaka was being brought to a berth at No. 7 wharf, on tbe opposite side of which the Coptic, with the coal hulk Lota alongside, was lying. Captain Galbraith, the pilot in charge of the Rimu taka, gave the order “ half speed astern," which was telegraphed to the engine room, but when the bands of the dial pointed to “ full speed ahead," the wire with which tbe apparatus was worked broke. The engineer went full speed ahead. The officer in charge of the telegraph saw by bis dial what was wrong, and at once rushed to the engine room, but before the steamer could be checked she ran into the Coptic’s bow. The Coptic’s forestay was snapped, her head rails and stanchions carried away, the steam bead dinted, and the woodwork splintered. The Lota’s stern was damaged.
