A land Act Case-
NEW PLYMOUTH, Fbb. 28.
The charges against Hondy, for making an alleged false declarations under the Laud Act was called on at the Resident Magistrate’s Court this morning Mr Boy appeared for the Crown, and Mr Samuel for the defendant. Mr O’Hara Smith, auditor in the Land Department, who is prosecuting, with other witnesses, were ordered out of court during the hearing of the ease. Mr Sidney Weltman, Commissioner of Crown Lands, was the first witness. Ho produced a Q&zcttc proclaiming section 5, block 4, Hawera, opened for sale or selection under the Land Act Amendment Act, 1887 ; area, 720 acres. His examination is now going on.
FireMABTERTON, Fbb. 28,
A private boarding house, known as the Argyle House, situated in Queen street, was totally destroyed by fire last night. The building contained 14 rooms and was insured in the South British for' £250, and the furniture for £IOO in tho same office.

James Grainger was charged at the Resident Magistrate’s Court with shooting Theophilus George in the shoulder. Prisoner had been looked upon as prosecutor’s step-son, but in his evidence George said that ho had been living with Mrs George as man and wife 18 years* According to hio statement be had quarrelled with her, and was smashing the house with an axe which be held in a threatening attitude to Mrs Grainger, when prisoner fired a revolver and hit him in the shoulder. Afterwords he fired again, but missed him There had been a struggle before in which be got a rib broken. The wound was not dangerous, but it kept prosecutor in the hospital three weeks Football* Tho first annual meeting of the Bugby Union has been called for April 22nd at Wellington.
