AUSTRALIAN FLOODS.
MS®TINS' AT GERALDINE. A large and representative meeting of residents in Geraldine was held last evening. There were several ladies present, though the weather was very inclement. The chair was taken by Mr A. White, chairman of the Town Board, and the Sevs. J. Preston, W. Woollaas, and A. B. Todd occupied seats on the platform. The chairman having explained the object of calling the meeting, stated he had received letters of apology from Mr Winstone, manager of the Bank of New Zealand, and the Bev. Father Treaoy. The latter intimated that his bishop had ordered a special appeal in aid of the Queensland sufferers to be made in his church on Sunday next. Both writers expressed the deepest sympathy with the movement. Mr M. C. Orbeil proposed the first resolution, wbioh was seconded by the Bev. Mr Wooliass and carried—“ That this meeting deeply deplores the disaster that has befallen our fellow colonists in Brisbane, and pledges itself to do all in its power to assist the sufferers by collecting subscriptions in either money, goods, or farm produce.” The Bev. J. Preston proposed, Major Moore seconded, and it was resolved—“ That with a view to further the causa a committee be formed as under:—The clergy, members of the Geraldine Town Board, Major Moore, Captain Temple, Dr Fish, Hon. J. B. A. Aoland, Messrs M. 0. Orball, H. B. Webster, B. H. Pearpoint, N. Dunlop, H. W. Moore, B. Skinner, J. Allan, J. McKenzie, P. B. Flatmaa, 0. G. Tripp, C. J. Dennistoun, J. Keliand, W. B. Barker, Button, J. Winstone, and A. E. Hawkins.” The Bev. J. Preston stated he had already received £1 from Mrs Eeaoigb, of the Geraldine Hotel.
The Bov- A. B. Todd proposed, Dr Fish, seconded, and it was carried —“ That subscription lists be circulated at once, and as immediate relief is necessary, the latest date on which subscriptions be received bo March 6th,”
On the motion of Mr Webster, seconded by Mr G. ’H. Patrick it was resolved—” That all money subscriptions gathered in the Geraldine district be cabled over to Queensland by the Geraldine Committee, and that arrangements be made to send the produce on the same date as the Timaru people send theirs, so as to avoid it being sent in dribs and drabs”
Mr A. White was appointed treasurer, and Mr 0. B. Sberratt secretary.
The usual vote of thanks to the chairman ended the meeting. A meeting of the committee was held afterwards for the purpose of arranging matters.
The sum of £32 odd was collected in the hall during the evening. The representatives of the three churches present at the meeting intimated that special collections would be made on the following Sunday during the services:
