Temuka District High School.

The monthly meeting of the Temuka District High School Committee was held on Tuesday evening. Present Messrs W. Storey (chairman), T. F. Hooper, G. Levees ,T. Salmond, A. Bussell, C. Battes, and A. W. Surridge. TbOi headmaster, Mr D. Ferguson, waited upon the committee and was formally introduced by the chairman to members. Advantage was taken of hia presence for a discussion on various matters of school discipline, home work, etc. Mr Ferguson expressed the opinion that after a time the amount of home work could bo curtailed. In connection with the cadet corps he stated that there was a sum of £l9 19s lid to the credit of the company. He had been gazetted captain vice Mr W. Bryars, deceased. On the motion of Mr Salmond, seconded by Mr Levens, the secretary was instructed to obtain the sanction of the Defence Minister to admit Mr Ferguson to operate upon the cadet corps account Correspondence was received from the Education Board, notifying payment of £ll 7s 61 to the credit of the committee for incidentals. GiUam applied for permission for the Bevs. Dellow, Butterfield and himself to give religious instruction in the school after hours on Friday. They proposed to teaoh the children in standards, not to form classes according to the denomination to which the children belong, and the teaching was to be purely uneectarian. The Bev. John Dickson (Presbyterian) wrote, stating that be did not join in the request made by the Eev. Mr Gillam, although be was in favour of the Education Aoc being amended so as to permit the Bible being read by the teachers themselves. He believed that an attempt was being made to denominationalize -the education of New Zealand, and it behoved those who admin istered the secular system of education to resist this. After a brief discussion it was moved by Mr Salmond, seconded by Mr Mr Bates, and carried—“ That permission be given to the Bevs. Dellow, Gillam, and Butterfield, to give religious instruction in the school after school hours on Friday.” On the motion of Mr Hooper, seconded by Mr Levens, it was resolved to vote for Messrs W. Storey, D. L. Inwood, and J. W. Salmond among the candidates for election to seats on the Board, The headmaster reported the attendance as satisfactory. Five applications were received for the position of pupil teacher, and after consideration it was resolved to recommend Miss Marion MoOaskill for appointment. The visitors’ report was satisfactory. Messrs Surridge and Bussell were appointed visitors for the ensuing month. On the motion of Mr Bussell, seconded by Mr Salmond, it was resolved—“ That the committee record a hearty vote of thanks to Mrs Gaze for her courtesy and consideration in providing afternoon tea for the committee and visitors on the occasion of the annnal prize-giving.” Mies Goodey tendered her resignation as fourth year pupil teacher, and asked to be relieved of her duties as soon as possible.— The chairman had already taken steps to comply with her request, and the secretary was instructed to convey to Miss Goodey the committee's appreciation of her services during her term of apprenticeship. Sundry accounts were passed for payment end the meeting terminated.
