Minister of Lands.
(BV THX.BORAFB. ) BLENHEIM, Feb. 23. The Hon. Mr McKenzie addressed a crowded meeting in Blenheim to-night. Owing to the illness of the mayor, Mr Buiok, M H.B„ was chairman. The Minister defended the land policy of the Government, and explained that the Ministry before taking over the Cheviot estate, had employed three different sets of valuers, showing an average profit of over £4o*ooo on their purchase. A syndicate had offered to purchase the estate, hut the Government had no interest in selling or intention to sell when they took over the land. He said that there was no survey, and in October 30 000 seres of agricultural land would be placed on the market, and the balance left for twelve montbe, or until the survey was completed. The whole scheme would be submitted to Parliament. He then dealt with the question of Marlborough waste lands, giving every satisfaction to the settlers. A. vote of thauks to Mr McKenzie and confidence in the Government was declared carried.
