NEWS OF THE DAY.
The youth Sullivan, who wae injured by a branch of a tree falling upon his arm and breaking it, died at the hospital last evening, tetanus having supervened.
The following will represent the oecondi eleven of the Timaru Cricket Club in their match with the Tetnoba second at Temuka to-morrow, viz.:—G. Jones, Healey, Sims, Buchanan, Wood, Wicksteed, Shepherd, Hasaell, Turnbull, Chisholm, and P. Perry.
The horse attached to Lieuteoant-Colonel Bailey’s daisy cart boiled from the railway station yesterday afternoon, having, it is supposed, taken fright at a passing train. The horse was soon caught, and no damage was done.
The 0 Battery fire for trophies presented by Messrs S. Anderson and Co. first, and Mr T. Bice second, to-morrow ; shooting to commence at 530 am, 2.30, and 5 p.m. The conditions are seven shots each at 200 yards and 300 yards, any military position ; Wimbledon targets and scoring.
A friendly shooting match will be fired tomorrow between the Napier and Titnaru Navals on their respective ranges. Lieutenant Gooch will watch the interests of the Titnaru men on the Napier range, and Lieuterant Thomas that of the Napier men on the Timaru range. The conditions of the match are ton men a side j seven shots at 200 yards 300 yards, and 60Qyards ; any position. The Timaru Navals will be represented by the following team; C.P.C. Bradley; P.Oa Stephen, Hathaway, Thomson, Waugh ; Gunners A. Burford, Qosney, Bain, J. Beckingham, and G. Burford. Emergencies—P.Os Toueyoliffe and Bontoul, and Gunners Toney, cliffe and Hicbolls.
The ordinary meeting of the Mount Peel Boad Board was held on Friday last. The members present were - Messrs G. J. Dennistoun, E. Thew, and D. Alexander. In the absence of Mr 0. G. Tripp Mr Dennistoun occupied the chair. Correspondence was road and considered. It was resolved that the clerk prepare plans and estimates, and call for tenders for erecting a footbridge over the main stream of the South Opuha, tenders to be in by next Board day; that the clerk make out estimates showing work likely to be required by perpetual leaseholders to give them access to their various sections, so that thirds can be paid as they accrue. Accounts amounting to £lB Is were passed* for payment, and the Board rose.
The usual fortnightly meeting of the Timaru I;odge, United Ancient Order of Druids, was held last evening in the Foresters’ Hall, George street, A.D., Bro. B. W. Simpson, presiding. The attendance was very fair. A quantity of correspondence was read j from the District Grand Dodge enclosing copies of business paper for District meeting to be held on ednesday, March Ist, in Timaru ; from the Queensland Belief
Committee, enclosing subscription list and asking for a liberal response; from Bro. W, Ferrier, asking that ha be permitted to photograph the Grand Lodge officers on the day after the Grand Lodge meeting. A ballot was taken for a candidate, and he being in attendance was initiated into the rites of Druidism. Two candidates were proposed. Harmony was then indulged in, Bros O Homo and A. Budd contributing recitations, and Bro. W. M. Howe a song. The Grand Lodge business paper was then fully gone into, and representatives were instructed hovf to act. It was unanimously resolved that the subscription list for the Queensland relief fund bo headed by a donation of £5 ss, and the list was kept open for the evening, the total amount on the list being £5 15s. Bro W. Perrier's letter was handed to the representatives to deal with. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to the Crystal Spring lodge of Good Templars, for their kindness in giving up the use of their lodge room on Wednesday, March Ist, to make room for the District Grand Lodge meeting to be held on that date. The lodge was closed in due form by the Arch Druid at 10 o’clock. The receipts for the evening were £7 13s 6d. WHAT SPOILS A LADY’S APPEARANCE ?
