Banquet.

WELLINGTON, Ebb. 80. This evening Volunteer Ballinger, of the Wellington Guards, champion rifle shot of New Zealand, was entertained at a banquet by the members of the company. Among those present were the Hon. Mr Seddon, Defence Minister, Lieutenant-Colonel Fox, Commandant of the Forces, His Worship the Mayor, Major Newell, officer commanding the district, Messrs Duthie, Fisher, and McLean, city members, and officers of the local volunteer companies. The proceedings were marked with great enthusiasm, and Captain Paterson of the Guards in proposing the health of the champion, spoke in the highest terms of him as a rifle shot and volunteer. The mayor proposed the Defence Department. Mr Seddon in replying said that the Government were determined so far as the finances enabled them to encourage the volunteer movement which hitbertohsdnotreoeived the support it deserved. The tosst of the ex-ohampions were honoured, P.O. Williams and Captain Ballinger, of the Petone Bifle Club, responding. The proceedings terminated at midnight.
