A kindly act was done by a resident of Ashburton on Tuesday, says the Guardian , an act that did credit both to his kindness of heart and bis ’outeneos of head. A drunken man was knocking about town, and tumbled into the shop of the resident in question. The man was very drunk, and unable to do business. He presented a cheque in payment of goods be hadn’t bought,. and foreseeing the possibility of the foolish man very easily losing the money which the cheque for a considerable sum—represented, the resident marked the cheque “ pay Sergeant Mfiller only.” This little legend had the desired effect, as when the man in a rery limp state mentally and physically fell into the hands of the police, the cheque was found to hare stood fire well. *' Where are you going my pretty maid ?” *' To the store for some Biscuits, Sir," she said Whose Biscuits my pretty maid ?” “ Why Arris ebbook’s Os wegos, Sir,” eheflaid. •—[Adyt.]
