The Government have made a compassion* ate allowance to the widow of Mr Crawford, late Inspector of Machinery for Otago, the sum being equal to the amount of a year’s salary of her late husband. The Cabinet bad under consideration the question of granting a compassionate allowance to the widow of Mr J. Blackett,late consulting engineer for the colony in London, bnt no decision was arrived at.
Mr Ritchie, chief Inspector of Stock, leaves for the south to-morrow for the pur* pose of inspecting the rabbit proof fence in North Canterbury, Marlborough, and Kelson. He will work his way overland from Christchurch to Kelson. WESTPORT, Feb. 8. Dr Gaze has stated bis intention of contesting the Inangahua seat at the general ( electionDavid Bennett, aged between 50 and 60, an old resident of the district, committed suicide at Waimangaroa yesterday. He bad been drinking, and left hie companions with the remark that he intended to blow his head off. An explosion was beard in the hut, and Bennett was found with his head blown almost completely away. Deceased had apparently inserted a plug of dynamite in bis mouth and exploded it. He had served in the navy during the Crimean war. At the inquest the verdict of the jury was suicide while under the influence of drink. Mr S.J. O'Oonor addressed his constituents last night at a large and orderly meeting. OHBIBTOHUROH, Fra. 8. The United Hercules Hydraulic Sluicing Company’s report shows the yield of gold to be £5385, against £4212 for the previous twelve months. The net profit was £2OBO, which enabled the payment of two dividends of Is each and the reduction of the liabilities by £9lO, leaving a balance of £869 to credit of profit and loss account.
