A FEARFUL TRAGEDY NEAR AUCKLAND.
A MAN MURDERS HIS SECOND WIFE.
A fearful occurrence is reported from Howick. A farm . laborer, named Crowley, murdered his Wife on Sunday night last with a box iron. It appears she was his second wife, and was known in the place as a termagant. The chief cause of disagreement between the pair was Mrs Crowley's ill-treatment of his daughter, whom he fondly loved, and they lived a most unhappy life. He was steady, industrious and goodtempered, and about 49 years of age. His wife was about 29 and there was no issue by the marriage. On Sunday morning it appears Crowley and his wife were going to mass (they were Bomaa Catholics), and Crowley having no shirt inned, took down the iron to prepare the garment himself. His wife stood :t nagging ” at him until he appears to have been goaded to madness, and sprung upon her, smashing her head and features into an unrecognisable mass, and killing her immediately. He was very soon arrested and was to appear at the Magistrate’s Court to-day.
