FIRE.
At 3.20 this afternoon a good deal of excitement was caused in the town by the ringing of the wretched tinkling machine that does duty for a fire bell. People ran to and fro looking for the cause of the alarm, and on arriving at the Fire Brigade station it was ascertained that a wooden building on Maori Hill, owned by Mr T. Winter and formerly used as a boarding house by Mr McKenzie, but now occupied by Mr Walker, schoolmaster of the Waimataitai School, was on fire. The Brigade, under Superintendent Amos, turned out promptly and an express being in attendance, the hose reel was attached, and'it was soon on its way to the scene of the fire. Other members of the Brigade quickly followed in expresses. When * the Brigade arrived at the fire, the building was one muss of flames, and any attempt to save it was hopeless. There was no water on the premises or in the vicinity; bad the wind not been blowing in the direction it was, it would have been difficult to save Mr Lewis’ premises adjoining. Buckets of water were thrown on this building, and the fire was confined to the build ing in which it originated. It appears that Mr and Mrs Walker were absent when the fire occurred and they lost everything. The furniture was all destroyed. It was insured for £l5O in the Royal office. The building was insured in the same office for £BOO. Mr Walker is a loser of £IOO over and above the insurance. An incident worthy of notice occurred during the fire. The flames reached the telegraph line and the beat was so great that the wires were burnt through. They dropped on the ground and stopped telegraphic communication between Timaru and the nortb.
