THE LATE WRECKS.

Mr Mcßride, stonemason, is the successful tenderer for the erection of the monument to the memory of those drowned here on May 14th last. It will, by permission of the Government, be placed on the vacant part of the Post Office section, at the rear of that building. The amount of the tender is £276, towards which £2OO have been already subscribed. The Hon. Secretary to the Relief Committee has received from the Victorian Humane Society the following : “ Victorian Humane Society, 76 Collins street, W , Melbourne, Oct. 13, 1882 : To W. Ziesler, Esq., Hon. Secretary Timaru Relief Committee. Sir, —I have to thank you for the trouble you have already taken in the matter forming the subject of this correspondence, and am instructed to request that you will be good enough to convene a meeting of the survivors of the crews of the lifeboat and the surfboat on the occasion, with the object of deciding upon those who most distinguished themselves in the effort to save life, and thus merit the special recognition of this Society. If you will then kindly get one of the forms already sent tided in for each person so selected, with a brief statement attested by a Magistrate in the space left for that purpose, and have the same returned to me, toy directors will be glad to make an award in the case. The information at present supplied, is too vague and general to enable them to exercise a just discrimination. Awaiting as early a reply as is convenient to you, I have the honor to, &c., J, Habey Haybon, Secretary.”
