THE NEW LICENSING ACT.

We have received a copy of the “Licensing Act Amendment Act" of last session. It contains eighteen clauses, some of the more important provisions being as follow:—The Governor may amalgamate two or more licensing districts upon petition from a majority of the ratepayers within each such district. Where more local bodies than one has jurisdiction within a licensing district, the Governor shall appoint which of such bodies shall have authority in the district; and every council or board of every Town district or Eoad district receiving fees accruing within the licensing district shall contribute proportionately to the cost of administering the Act. When a license is granted at any time other than at the annual meeting it shall continue in force until the 20th June next ensuing, and a correspondingly proportionate fee shall be paid. Quarterly licensing meetings are not required to be advertised, but notices must be posted concerning them; where there is no business no meeting need be held. Applications for renewals need not be advertised. Eleven o'clock licenses are provided for, and they may be obtained in the same way as 12 o’clock licenses under the original Act, but at half the extra fee, namely £5.
