Melbourne, Sept. 26.
Mr George Darrell, the actor, has arrived in the Cotopaxi from England after two years absence. Demonstrations' to . celebrate the English victory have taken place in the principal towns of the colony. Eighteen thousand people took part in a torchlight procession at Ballarat on Saturday. Steps are being taken at Brunswick to consider the ad visability of introducing the electric light in public thoroughfares. The matter will be discussed at the next meeting : of the local Board. On Sunday last allusion was made ip most of the churches to the victory in Egypt. The Bishop said that although opinion was divided as to the necessity, of the war, we had reason to be thankful that the English soldiers had not lost courage or a sense of duty, and secondly that England still keeps a command of | the highway to India. ; The Government has completed arrangements with the Associated Banks for floating the four million loan.

Sydney, Sept. 26. The Manager of the Globe Colliery has sent notice that the men • must accept arbitration in all points or none at all. It is reported that the men intend to strike.,
The steamer Glenworth, on her maiden trip to Brisbane, burst her steam chest and had to be towed hack. The third engineer was severely scalded. Temporary offices have been engaged for the departments lately located in the Garden Palace, so that the officers will; . not be thrown out of employment. Mr Hoskins, member for.Tumut, and ; late Minister of Lands, who is now in England on leave. has resigned his seat. Sir Henry Parkes’ stay at Faulconbridge has improved his health a little.
