PAINFUL OCCURRENCE.
About ton o’clock this morning those employed about the breakwater were startled to observe Joseph Lane, a carpenter frequently employed at the Landing Service, coming down in an evident state of unnatural excitement, with bis basket of tools,’ These he threw over the railing into the water, and then his strange behaviour left no doubt that the mind of the unfortunate man was deranged. Ho started off along the line, and was followed a few' moments after by Constable Black and others, who succeeded in capturing him near the Saltwater Creek. He offered so desperate a'resistance that if was found necessary to handcuff him. He was immediately brought into town and placed under restraint, while a medical man was sent for. E. Archer, Esq., remanded him this afternoon for medical treatment.
