TIMARU BAPTIST CONGREGATION-

THE NEW CHAPEL,

The Baptists of this town have been laboring under great disadvantages since their Church was formed, owing to the want of a suitable building ; but they are how in a fair way to have proper accommodation for their work. Since the arrival of their new pastor, Mr Johnston, they have seen their way to “arise and build.” A suitable site having been obtained in E street, which is not only central,‘but has the advantage of being planted in the midst of a growing and populous neighborhood without “rubbing shoulders” with the other places of worship (which seems to be a characteristic of this town). The site itself is not all that could be desired, owing to its lying on the slope descending from Church street; the result being that extra work has been required in levelling, but this has been done by a concrete wall along the south or lower side, so that the ground will be but slightly on the slope. The building itself will be of wood, set on concrete foundations and will seat nearly 300, havinga Minister’s vestry in the front. The main building will be 40ft by 40ft, having two aisles, and a pulpit, 13ft by 6ft, with segmental rail and front, and an iron balustrade. There will be a baptistry of concrete and cement, immediately in front of the pulpit, which will be covered (when not used) and form a platform 13ft by 6ft. The seats, dado, doors and pulpit will be stained and varnished ; the latter will be in front of the building, and the entrance will be on each side of it. The ceiling will be 20ft from the floor, of lining, with a circular cove at the sides and will be painted a light color. The walls will be plastered and colored to match the ceiling. The windows will bo circular-headed with marginal lights. The interior will have a very comfortable appearance, and be ventilated from the floor, windows, and ceiling. The Minister’s vestry in front will be 14ft by 10ft having a door immediately behind the pulpit and another door communicating with the lobbies, the latter will be 4ft wide. The vestry and lobbies will be finished to correapond with the main building. The front, when completed, is intended to have two vestries, or classrooms, in addition to the above mentioned, and a third over the minister’s vestry, which* will not be completed at present. The exterior of the building in the front will have a large relieving arch supported on an entablature of the Doric order, and double pilasters at each side, standing on pedestals. A large front window and a two-leaved door enhance the appearance of the building. The cost of the part completed just now will be about £SBO, including the seats. The contractors are Messrs Boukitt and Grade. The architect is the pastor, the Rev. George Johnston, His Honor Judge Ward has kindly consented to lay the foundation stone to-morrow at 2 o’clock, when several ministers of the town are expected to take part in the proceedings, The building will probably be cornpleted about the end of November.
