The total reserve in notes and bullion in the Bank of England remains at £11,125,000. New Zealand securities, colonial breadstuffs and tallow are without quotable
change. Consols remain at 100£. New Zealand securities :—5 per cent 10-40 loan is at 107 J; 5 per cent 1889 loan, 106^; 44 per cent 1879-1904 loan, 101$, ex dividend.
Adelaide wheat, ex warehouse, remains at 48s fid, and New Zealand "at 465. Adelaide flour, ex warehouse, is quoted at 355. The total quantity of wheat afloat for Great Britain, is 2,210,000 qrs. Australian tallow is firm at 46s fid for best mutton, and 45s fid for best beef. The total stock in London to-day was 14,600 casks. Best Sydney copra is quoted at £lB 10s an advance of £l. Wool SalesThere was a fair demand at to-day’s wool sales. The catalogue comprised 10,500 bales. At to-day’s wool sale 97,000 bales were offered at auction. The tone of the sale was firm. 92,000 bales have been withdrawn from sales since the opening of the series. Archbishop Tait's Life in Danger* Dr Tait, Archbishop of Canterbury, who is suffering from congestion of the lungs has had a serious relapse and is now in a prostrate condition. The Irish Constabulary StrikeWholesale dismissals have been made in the Dnblin police force, of men who had attended the recent meeting of malcontents. The ranks of the force have been materially thinned by the discharges, and bodies of troops have consequently , been drafted off and now occupy the various police stations in the city and suburbs. A number of special constables are being sworn in to take the place temporarily of the men dismissed. Latbb. ; The dismissal of the malcontents from the Dublin police force has resulted in an extensive strike of constables in that city, and’’owing to the absence of the police from the streets, serious rioting by a number of roughs took place last night. Houses and shops were attacked, and several were much damaged. The troops were called out and charged the rioters, some of who'm were severely punished. Additional special constables are now being enrolled to assist in the maintenance of order. Sept. 3. The majority of constables in Dublin who went out on strike yesterday have' since expressed their penitence, and have returned to their duties. Further rioting which tobk place last night was promptly suppressed by the military.

News is to hand from the scene of hostilities in Thessaly that overtures were made by the Tusks for a compromise but the proposal was rejected by the Greeks, and fighting between the two forces continues in the neighborhood of Dagair. Sept. 2. Successful efforts have been made by the Greek and Turkish Governments to ■ put a stop to. the .fighting, which for some days passed has occurred in Thessaly between the subjects of the two Powers. Hostilities have now ceased, pending diplomatic negotiations for a settlement of the dispute. (Pee Cable to Peess Association.) [“ Aegus ” Special.] A Steamer Wrecked at ArklowLondon, Sept. 1,6 p.m. ■ The steamer Lake Pigeon has been wrecked at Arklow, and five boats containing a number of the crew and passengers are missing. , Sept. 2, 2.40 p m. The boats missing from the wrecked; steamer Lake Pigeon have turned upsafe. ■ Frozen Meat. The frozen meat per Lusitania has averaged s£d per lb. ’ The shipment of frozen meat per Austral has arrived in moderate condition, and realised an average of 6d per lb. Wool SalesAf the wool sales to day, 10,600 bales were catalogued, of which 8000 were The prices for good merinos and fine cross-breds have slightly improved. There is no alteration for inferior sorts. Judicial PromotionSir Hardingo S. Gifford, Q.C., is likely to have an early promotion to the Bench. He was appointed SolicitorGeneral in Mr Disraeli’s Administration; in 1876, and shortly afterwards received / the honor of knighthood. In 1877 he was elected M.P. for Launceston. Miners on Strike: A conference of miners at Manchester has approved of a general strike in October.
Volunteer Orangemen. Two thousand Orangemen have offered themselves as special constables, to preserve peace in Ireland.
