ing Bill met to-day. but has now broken up, and the Assembly has the measure again under discussion. Opening of ParliamentSydney, August 22. The New South Wales Parliament was opened to-day by the Governor, Lord Augustus Loftus. His Excellency’s speech on the occasion stated that special business necessitated the meeting of Parliament at the present time. It announced that measures would be introduced during the session dealing with the following questions ; —Local Government, land laws, the consolidation and conversion of public securities, the criminal law, mining, forests, titles to property and adulteration of food. His Excellency congratulated the colony on the satisfactory state of the revenue, the success of the Licensing Act, and the progress of the railway extension. The speech further alluded to the question of water conservation throughout the colony, the works proceeding for a metropolitan water supply, and to the measures adopted for the improvement of the city of Sydney. A meeting of thS Opposition members of Parliament was held this evening, at which the policy of the Government as foreshadowed in the Governor’s speech was discussed. It is thought probable that Mr Alexander Stuart will be elected leader of the Opposition, and that the party is consolidating.
