THE LOWER HEATHCOTE SCHOOL SCANDAL.

At tho meeting of the Christchurch Board of Education yesterday afternoon the report made by Dr Giles, tho Commissioner appointed by Government to inquire into the circumstances attending the dismissal of tho Eev. G. Wilkes from the head mastership of tho Lower Heathcote school, was read, After reviewing the evidence, Dr Giles gave it as his opinion that Mr Davis might sometimes, in the exercise of his duties as Chairman, have remained in the schoolroom for a longer time than was desirable. Mr Wilkes, however,

had not remonstrated as he should have done, but had gone to one of the pupil teachers and had spoken against Mr Davis in a manner he should not have done. Dr Giles’ opinion was that the matters mentioned in Mr Wilkes’ letter of May 2nd did not justify his letter of March 29th. It was almost incredible that the head master of a public school should act as Mr Wilkes’ had. done. The Commissioner considered that the charges were not substantiated, and thrt Mr Wilkes’ conduct was totally unjustifiable. ; ■“ / :
