LITERARY AND DEBATING SOCIETY.
The society had a very successful and pleasant meeting last night. > A > considerable number of visitors, (principally ladies) were present. The proceedings consisted of a scene from the “ Merchant of Venice " by Messrs Davidson, Taylor, and Kirby; a reading (from Mr W. Hoskins’ lecture on “ the Unseen characters ot Shakespeare") entitled “Yorick, the King’s Jester," by Mr Jameson; the Ghost scone from Hamlet by Messrs Kember and Kirby; the churchyard scene from the same play by Messrs Taylor Davidson. Kember and Kirby ; a sketch of an Irish schoolmaster by Mr L. G. Reid ;?two readings! from Pickwick, by Messrs Fraser ami Kirby respectively; and a recitation, " The Bells," by Mr Holthonso. The items were in all cose,a rendered effectively, and kept the audience so; thoroughly interested and amused that a moat enjoyable evening was spent. These “ reading " meetings ought to be more frequent. Next Thursday “ Lallah Rookh ’ v. “ Lady of the Lake ” will be the subject of a debate.
