THE WATERLOO MEETING. FIRST DAY, Stewards—Messrs W. G. Walker and E. P HiU (Ohristchurch); B. Thomson and G. Laurie (South Canterbury); W. McAuley and A. Thompson (North Otago) ; J. Bannatyne and J. McDonald (Milton); T. Surman and R. Blackham (Southland). Flag ’ Steward—Mr W. Hay. Slip Stewards * —Messrs J. C. McKerrow, R. Morton and J. Bannatyne. Judge—Mr O. R. Wise. Slipper—Mr J. Turner. Secretary—Mr R, Stewart. One of the most successful Waterloo Meetings that have ever been held in ; the colony, was commenced at nine o’clock yesterday morning, on the Levels estate, a distance of about eight miles from Timaru. The meeting having been appointed to be held in South Canterbury this year, it was arranged and carried out under the auspices of the South Canterbury Coursing Club. The weather yesterday was fine, but there was . rather a sharp, dry, south-west wind blowing. Sport, however, was so good, and the courses were run in such rapid succession, ’ that those present had not time to get cold. Hares were plentiful, but not too plentiful, artd the unusual number of thirty courses were got off on the first day. With a few exceptions the courses were long ones that brought out the working power of the dogs. Wo regret to have to record the loss of a valuable dog during the day. Richmond, during bis first course ran against a stake in a fence and broke his neck. The attendance on the ground was large and all seemed delighted with the day’s sport. The following are the results of the coursing:— Waterloo Cup, for all-aged dogs, at £l2 10s each; closed with 40 entries. Winner, £190; runner-ap, £7O; one dog, £l6 10s; three dogs, £l2 10s each; six dogs, £5 each weight dogs, £3 each. FIRST COURSES. McAuley Bros’.bdl and w b Bonnie Scotland beat H.
