SOUTH CANTERBURY POULTRY, PIGEON, AND CANARY ASSOCIATION.
Patron—His Honor Judge Ward ; President—H. Belfield, Esq.; VicePresidents—D. M. Boss' and L. Qv Boid, Esqrs,; Treasurer—Mr A. J.H. Bower; Secretary—Mr A. M. Walcot; Committee of Management—Messrs W. Collins, J. Dow, J. Ingram, C. Johnson, P. McArdle, ; and T. Yelland. The first annual exhibition of this Association was opened to-day and will continue open to-morrow in Messrs Maclean and Stewart’s potion mart. The number and variety of the' exhibits are remarkable for a first exhibition. The pons for poultry are neatly arranged along the sale-yard, while the pigeon and canary exhibits are suitably ditposed in the saleroom. Thirty six varieties of poultry, eighteen of pigeons, and twenty-one of canaries are shown. There are some fine exhibits of poultry, notably some Longshans,-a class of fowl of which the first was imported to New Zealand by Mr Saunders, of Ashburton. There are some splendid Cochins, almost every variety of game and bantam fowl, and gome grand Dorking. In pigeons, there is a good display. A very fine pair of fantails is exhibited, and some very fine Antwerps and Nuns. Of Canaries, there is a very considerable display. The premier bird is a Belgian (clear). This exquisite little ‘bird has a good deal of fluffy feather about him which at first glance conceal „ his beautiful proportions, but on closer ’ his claim to first place is manifest. The Norwich birds are all remarkably .fine and in great variety. Several fine birds are shown, not for competition,
Mr D. M. Boss shows among these a Tasmanian starling and a talking cockatoo which has been remarkably well educated: During the afternoon tbs attendance has been limited, but doubtless it will swell considerably in the evening. Gas has been laid on in the sale yard specially for this occasion. The arrangements have been well carried out and the show may be pronounced very successful. and such as will establish this association as one of our permanent institutions. PRIZE LIST.
