INQUEST ON STACK FIRE.
At the inquest oh the stack ’ fire yes. terday afternoon the jury returned the following verdict to the effect that the stacks had been maliciously set fire to by some persons at present unknown. The owner of the stacks (D. Heffernan) said he had insured the crop for £4OO He estimated the crop at 30 bushels per acre, and insured it accordingly. The Union Office had declined the risk so : a policy was effected in tho Liverpool, London, and Globe Office. Heffernan informed the agent for the Company that the grain—the proceeds of 84£ acres—was valued at £IOOO. Two witnesses, O. M. Smith and W. Gosling estimated the crop, the former at about 18, and the latter nt from 15 to 20 bushels per acre. A witness named J. Newton said he saw Heffernan and another man' in close conversation on the day before the stacks were burned. They were then close to Whittaker’s paddock, and about 50 chains on the Timaru side of the stacks. Heffernan himself stated that the day before the stacks were burned he went to Albury to fetch down an engine and elevator, and when he returned he heard his stacks of wheat had been burned.
