BOROUGH COUNCIL.

An ordinary meeting of the Timaru Borough Council was held last evening. Present—Councillors Jackson (in the chair), Gibson, Shepherd, Cullman, Gabites, Sherratt, Bash and Boss. A large amount of correspondence was received asking for remission of rates; metalling of streets ; premission to ereqt additions to buildings, and other minor matters. These were duly dealt with.

A deputation consisting of Messrs Watkins, Meikle, and Spillane waited upon the Council to urge upon them the necessity of improving the condition of Cain’s Terrace. Mr Watkins acted as spokesman and referred to a statement of the amount received from rates on the properties fronting on Cain’s Terrace, and of the amount that had been expended on the street from 1868 to 1872. The amount' of general rate was set down ; at £75 ; , special waterrate, £75; water-rate, £3B; hotel licenses, £100; or £2BB per annum. The statement of expenditure showed that a total amount of £10715 8d had been expended on the street, £6O, or more than half, being, the. copt of the first cutting, made in 1872. After the withdrawal of the deputation, considerable discussion took place which was closed by the passing of the following resolution, proposed by Cr Bush, seconded by Cr Sberratt—“ That tenders be called for 600 yards of broken metal for George.and Strathallan streets and Cain’s Terrace, the Works Committee to accept tenders.” BELIEF BUND. Letters enclosing cheques were received from the Dunedin “ Herald,** £35 18s, Oamaru Harbor ' Board, £8 8, Mayor of Waikouaiti, £l7 10s. . FOEEMAN 01? WOHES EEPOET. The Foreman reported the spreading of all the available broken metal on the streets, and a great quantity of shingling work. It was thought by most Councillors that the shingling had been a mistake. The report was adopted. 8188 BEIL. • The Council, on the suggestion of the superintendent of the Christchurch Fire Brigade, decided to purchase (if proved suitable) a forty-inch bell lately imported by the Union Insurance Company, HABBOE LOAN. The Harbor Board wrote requesting the Council to co-operate with them in obtaining the sanction of the ratepayers to a loan being raised. On the motion of Cr Boss, seconded by Cr, Bash, it was unanimously re* solved— ‘‘ That this Council are one in opinion as to the great importance of speedily finishing the harbor works, and approve ■of the proposed loan required, and hereby appoint Cr Jackson as Chairman and presiding officer •at the poll to be taken as may be required.” . CEMETEBV BE3EBVE. Moved by Cr Gibson, seconded by Cr push, and carried Council is desirous of urging upon the members of Parliament for South Canterbury the great desirability of the Bill now before the House, giving power to sell the cemetery reserve becoming law. The small area pf the present cemetery will shortly necessitate a fresh site being purchased, and it is therafore highly desirable that the sale of this reserve should furnish the necessary funds to enable the Cemetery Commissioners to purchase a suitable site before the values of property got beyond their means.” FINANCE. A statement of estimates, receipts,and expenditure on general account for the 10 months, ending March 31,1883, was then read. It showed a balance of icceipts over expenditure of £368 13s8d, the expenditure being £3055 Is 7d. Accounts wore passed for payment thus : General, £443 2s lid, Waterworks, £4 Is 9d. The Council then adjourned to Thursday evening.
