[Rroteb’s A GENOV, j Egyptian Affairs. London, July 7. la compliance with the demand of Admiral Seymour, the Egyptians have stopped the work of fortifying the harbor of Alexandria. The situation is ( however, still moat critical.
The English Channel Squadron,which recently arrived at Malta, has left that island for Alexandria. Two English regiments from the Malta garrison are on board the fleet.
July 8. No change has occurred in the sitnation of affairs. Admiral Sir Beauchamp Seymour has promised, in reply to a request made by the Foreign Consuls to-day, that he will give twenty-four hours’notice before commencing to bombard the city if.it should be found necessary to do so. It has transpired that the Conference of the European Ambassadors now sitting here has decided that it will on Monday next, formally invito the Porto to despatch troops to Egypt to determine the present crisis in that country, by armed intervention. In the event of refusal on tho part of tho Porte, it is considered probable that the Conference will recommend a mixed occupation by other European Powers. The Irish Repression Bill
The Irish Repression Bill was passed through Committee this evening, and read a second time,an amendment which had been proposed by Government having previously been rejected, During the debate on tho Bill, Mr Gladstone hinted that he should resign office. It is generally believed, however, that he will not do so at the present time. Death of General Skobeloff. The death is announced of General Michael Skobeloff. aged 39. CommercialConsols remain at 99|, The market rate of discount has been reduced to 2 per cent; bank rate 3 per cent. New Zealand securities are firm at last quotations. Adelaide wheat, ex store, has risen Is to 52s j Now Zealand, ex store has also advanced Is to 60s ; Adelaide flour is quoted at 365, an'ad vance of Is. The total quantity of wheat afloat for Groat Britain is 207,000 quarters, or 4000 quarters more than last week. Australian tallow—Best beef, 43s 6d,* best mutton, 44s 6d. Galvanised iron, 26 guage, £lB. Lateb.
Consols are unchanged at 99|. Now Zealand 5 per cent 10-40 loan has advanced to 106|; and the per cent loan to 103. The 5 per cent 1889 loan is unchanged at 106. The markets for colonial produce are unchanged.
