Mr Beetham, R.M. arrived in Timaru by the express train from Christehuroh today with two very distinguished visitors. They were no less personages than Te Whiti and Tohu, the celebrated state prisoners. Both are fine looking men, and they do not appear to have suffered in any way since their incarceration. After looking round the town they, in company with Mr Beetham, dined with Dr Hogg at his private residence. They left again for Christchurch in the up express this afternoon.

As an instance of the vast - trade that is clone by some of the sewing machine manufacturing firms, we take the following from a Scotch paper “ Further particulars have been made public regarding the great works about to be established near Kilbowie, on the Clyde, by the Singer Manufacturing Company. The site covers fully 46 acres, equal to a third of the area of Glasgow Green, and is amply provided with means of transit by rail and canal. The buildings will occupy two years in erection and the principal one will be fireproof. Tho various buildings will be connected with roadways, also fireproof, and by two miles of internal tramway lines. The output of machines when the new works are finished will be 10,000 per week, the output at the present works in Bridgetown, Glasgow, being 6000 weekly. The company have also a cabinet factory at Govan, and founding and japanning works at Bonnybridgc ; but the whole of these will be concentrated at Kilbowie, which will be one of the indnstrial “Rons” of Scotland when the works there are in full operation.”

“ What’s yonr religion, Mr Gilbert ?” asked the landlady of her new boarder. “Meat three times a day” was the reply that startled the good woman, and put her in a reverie as to whether the man was a heathen or misunderstood the question.

“Yon did wrong to shoot that man’s dog. You might have pushed him off with the butt of your gun,” said the Galveston recorder to the' raau who was charged witli shooting a neighbor’s dog. “ I would have done that," replied the prisoner, “ if the dog had come me tail first, but be como at me with his biting end.”
