[Rbutkr’s AGBNOY.J Australian Mails. London, May 5. The homeward Australian and New Zealand mails, via San Francisco, which loft Auckland on tlie 28th March, were delivered in London yesterday. Egyptian AffairsIt has transpired that the exehange of communications between the Powers which has been proceeding for some time past on the subject of the Egyptian question has resulted in an agreement being arrived at to substitute Prince Halim, in place of Tewfic Pasha on the Egyptian throne if it should become necessary ; to abandon the principle of Turkish occupation of Egypt, and to leave the initiative in Egyptian affairs to Prance. The Recent AssassinationNo fresh particulars regarding the assassination of the Irish Secretary and the Under Secretary have transpired. Nothing is known beyond the fact that their bodies were found horribly stabbed to death in Phoenix Park, and that the crime was committed in the evening. Mr Parnell has issued a manifesto, in which he states that the name of Ireland will be sullied nntil the assassins have been arrested. Cabinet Councils have been held to consider the situation. It is stated that the leaders of the Con servative party will support the Government if they proclaim martial law in Ireland. Both Houses of Parliament will adjourn to-morrow out. of respect to the deceased. Commercial.
Consols have advanced to 101$ ; New Zealand securities remain at the following quotations :—5 per cent 10-40 loan, 106$ ; 5 per cent 1889 loan, 103, ex div.; 3$ per cent 1870-1904 loan, 103$. Adelaide wheat, ox store, is quoted at 655, and New Zealand wheat, ex store, 525. Adelaide flour, ex store, is worth 375. The total quantity of wheat afloat for Great Britain is 2,480,000 quarters, being an increase of 140,000 quarters on last week’s return. Australian tallow — Best beef is quoted at 425, being an advance of Is ; and best mutton, 43s 6d, an advance of Is 6d. Hides are very flat and prices are deolinin g.
