DESTRUCTIVE FIRE AT TEMUKA.

A fire occurred at the Wallingford Hotel, Temuka, about two o’clock on bnnday afternoon. The Fire Brigade turned out promptly, under the command ot Captain Ollivier, By the time the Brigade was ready for action, however, the building was all ablaze. After working an hour and a half it was evident that the fire was declining. There was no wind, otherwise all the buildings on that side of the street, ineluding the Crown Hotel, would have been burned down. The roof of the building was completely charred, and, at a rough estimate, it is calculated that it would take £2OO to replace it. The neighbors worked with commendable diligence in removing the furniture from the reach of the flames, and great praise is due to Captain Ollivier and his men for their exertions. Their conduct on this occasion, will probably so far commend itself to the people of Temuka, as to induce them to contribute towards the cost of uniforms, which the Brigade require. The building is said to be insured in the New Zealand Co.’s Office for £ISOO. Honorable mention should be made of Sergeant Morton and Constable Burke for their vigilance.
