GERALDNE ROAD BOARD.

The usual monthly meeting of the Board was held on Tuesday, the 4th inst, at the office, Geraldine. Present: Messrs Postlethwaite (chairman), Flatman, Godsell, Upton Slack, andDeßenzy, The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. TENDERS. The following tenders were accepted : —No. 13, Footbridge, Speechly’s Corner, Huffey and Pizzey, £226 5s 6d; No. 14, ford at Campbell’s Creek, Martin Brophy, £22; No. 15, shingling near Orari School, William Scully, £4l, CORRESPONDENCE. The following correspondence was read and considered : From Mr G. D. Edmonds, dated 24th March, enclosing an account amounting to £37 11s 4d, being the cost of forming a level crossing near Oran.

Resolved—“ That the account be paid.” From Mr Robert Taylor, dated April 4, asking the patronage of the Board rc lunch on Board days in the event of Mr Muff going away. Resolved—“ That the support of the Board be given to each house six months at a time, commencing with Mr R. Taylor in July, 1882.” From Mr C. G. Tripp, dated April 1, asking permission to take water over the road for irrigation purposes—undertaking to make a proper ford and keep it in repair.

Resolved—“ That the application be granted subject to the usual conditions.” From the Under-Secretary for Public Works dated March 20 asking for the usual annual returns of receipts and expenditure, &c., of the Board. Resolved—“ That the return be filled up and forwarded as requested.” From Mr Nathaniel Longley, dated April 3, asking permission to remove earth or soil from north-east corner of section 35 on Lewis’ road ; also, asking if it is probable that the Road Board boundary between Orari and Rangitata will be altered. Resolved —“ That the Board do not see it has the power of granting the request.” From the Mount Peel Road Board, dated 31st March, with reference to procuring a supply of iron-bark piles. Resolved —“ That the Clerk acknowledge the receipt of the same and state that the Board is willing to leave the matter in the hands of the two Overseers.” From Messrs Moore Bros., dated Ist April, asking the Board to form the road between Gapes’ Valley and Hilton. Resolved—" That the Overseer report upon the same.” From Mr William Clark, dated sth April, asking if the Board will find cement to make a concrete kerb in front of his shop. Resolved —“ That the request be granted subjectto the work being done to the satisfaction of the Overseer.

A telegram was received from Thomas and Hill asking permission to substitute twelve inch-Tonnd piles instead of ten by ten. The Overseer stated that he objected to the change which was approved by the Board.

Proposed by Mr Flatman, seeonded by Mr Godsell, and carried—“ That the sum of £ISOO be placed to current account from deposits falling due on the 2nd May, 1882, the balance of £3,500 be deposited with the Bank of New South Wales and the Chairman arrange the same.”

The Overseer’s report was read and considered, and the following resolutions passed thereon (1) Overseer to re-let Casey’s contract on account of his leaving the district. (2) The Board approve of the Overseer letting the contract near Martin’s at his estimate. (3) Work as suggested to be done at stone bridge on the Geraldine road. (4) Thistle cutting on the roads in the district to be discontinued. (5) Iron bark timber to be ordered to the extent of 23,000 ft, (6) Willow stakes to be obtained for Pleasant Valley point. (7) That Mr James Radford be appointed clerk of works at the Hilton bridge and Weir at a salary of £3 per week. (8) Overseer to get 100 bushels of oats for the Board’s horse.

Resolved—“ That there be a public meeting convened on April 28, to consider the question of dividing the district into wards, and other matters of interest.” Accounts to the amount of £3BB 14s 8d were passed for payment. The Board then adjourned until Tuesday, May 11, at 10 a.m.
