Allan McLean owner of Louie, winner of. the Maiden Plate and Napier Handicap, received £465 and immediately gave a cheque for £IOO to the hospital. Chamber of Commerce. ; The first meeting took place yesterday afternoon. A Provisional Committee was elected to be Committee for the ensuing 12 months, and rules were adopted. SanitaryA deputation waited on the Mayor ; yesterday afternoon for the purpose of urging the Corporation to take every ■ measure for prevention of the spread of disease 'now rife in town. The Mayor did not-know whether the local Board of Health, appointed prior to the , establishment of the town into a Borough, was still in existence, but he promised to enforce clause 239 of the Municipal Corporations Act.
Fever RifeFergusson, proprietor of tlio^ Criterion Hotel, died yesterday. His eldest daughter died last week ; other members of the family and the servant are also down. In all thirty cases of fever are under treatment at the Hospital. A Cowardly ScoundrelWanganui, March 23. A serious case of, stabbing occurred at Aramatb early this morning. A man named Reuben Bason was walking with ‘ his wife, and abusing her, when, either by accident or design, a knife he was flourishing in his hand struck her in the abdomen, inflicting a wound two and a-half inches Iqng, from which the intestines protruded. Medical aid was obtained, and it was found that the intestines were not cot; they were replaced, and some hopes are entertained of -the woman’s recovery. Bason has has been apprehended. He is a wellknown character and has served several terms in gaol for ill-treating his wife. a _____ ‘ Frisco Mails- ~ Wellington, March 23. The City of New York, with the February English mails left San Francisco for Auckland on the 12th inst, one day late. The Zealandia, with the February colonial mails, arrived at San Francisco' from Auckland on the 21st inst., two days before time. The Commodore’s Movements. Christchurch, March 23, The Mayor has received a letter from Commodore Erskine, now at. Hobart, stating that he will no'; be able to attend the opening of the Exhibition; as hois ordered to Sydney shortly, but he will send H.M.S. Miranda, and hopes to be able to visit Christchurch himself before the Exhibition closes. Fatal Accident- ; : • Dunedin, March 23. William Brensell was accidentally killed at Deep Stream last night by the upsetting of his wagon.
