TEMUKA SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

A special meeting of this Committee was held last night for the purpose ofconsidering the Head Master’s explanat; tion of the report on the examination-' of the above school as conducted by the Inspector of schools. Present —Messrs Mackay (Chairman), Hay** hurst, Mendelson, Russell, Harrop/Bolton, and Davis. Before proceeding with the business; the Chairman stated that he intended to move—“ That the Committee meetings shall not be open to the public,” While it was desirable that the result of the Committee’s doings should be made known.it was not only undesirable, hut , often positively pernicious, that the f means employed to obtain these result?. He had no objection to reporters being present, but he would insist that nothing' should be reported except what was agreeable to the Committee. He would look to the Committee’ to support,, him in this matter, viz., that nothing which transpired at their meetings should find its way into the newspapers, but what had the Committee’s approval and sanction, and with this object he would move the above resolution. The resolution was seconded by Mr Hayhurst, and carried, against an amend* ment proposed by Mr Harrop, and., seconded by Mr Bolton, to the effect' that the fullest publicity should be given to the business transacted by the Committee. The Head Master’s explanation to the Inspector’s report of the examination of the School was then read, and the Master attended personally and further ’ supplemented the explanation. On the motion of Mr Mendelson, seconded by Mr Hayhurst, it was resolved “ That Mr M'lntosh’s explanation be referred to the Board of Education for their consideration end advice.” ; ’ A letter was read from Mr E. H. Brewer, stating that his boy had been. ■ reduced from a higher to a lower standard, and enclosing two copybooks to show the boy’s capacity. On the motion of Mr Mendelson, seconded by Mr Hayhurst the letter was referred to the Head Master for his report thereon. - The meeting then terminated.
