LATE CABLE NEWS.

(Per s.s. Rotorua from Australia). [Special to Melbourne “ Argus.”] London Feb. 15. The fund started at the Mansion House for the relief of Jews who have been subjected to persecution in Russia, amounts to £50,000. When Her Majesty the Queen was returning to Buckingham Palace from a drive to-day, the horses attached to her carriage became restive and bolted, the outrider was thrown and injured, but the horses were stopped before any further accident occurred. Her Majesty was greatly alarmed but not hurt. A fearful colliery explosion has taken place at Arimdon Grange colliery, near Hartlepool. A large number of miners were at work at the time, and although the exact loss of life is uncertain, it has been ascertained that upwards of sixty have been killed. General Skobeloffi has explained that his Saturday’s speech to Servian students at the University of Paris was made with the object of preventing war between the two countries. He adds, however, that if Russia is not to interfere on behalf of the Slav Provinces now in revolt, the Austrian Government must cease to oppress the people of those provinces. Intelligence has been received of an immense fire which has occurred at Haverhill City, Essex County, Massachusetts. Nearly the whole city has been destroyed, and damage has been done to the estimated value of $2,000,000. The Metropolitan Bishop of Moscow has urged upon the Emperor of Russia the necessity of leaving the secluded life which he has led since his accession to the throne.
