TIMARU HARBOR BOARD.

The third annual report of the Timaru Harbor Board, which, being printed, was “taken as read ” at the meeting of the. Board on Thursday, gives the length of the Breakwater at the end of the year, including 150 ft of approach ns 1050 ft. £II,OOO is stated to have been saved on contract No, 3—lSOfeet— by 'the authorised departure from the original plans. 300 feet of wharfage were constructed during the year, the depth at the end being now 18ft, 6in._at spring low tide. The Landing Service plant comprised seven iron and three vyoodea boats, and its capacity for landing and shipping is estimated at 400 tons per day. The moorings already laid down allow of six vessels being berthed inside the Breakwater, and. this work affords so much protection that work is seldom stopped by stress of weather. The “ range,” however, sometimes prevents vessels being .berthed at the wharf. Heavy moorings suitable for large vessels had been ordered and were expected to arrive in time to accommodate the first grain sbipa_ of the coining season. 336 vessels visited the port in 1881 in the previous year the number was '249. The report, makes reference to the dispute between the Board and the Government respecting the land taken for railway purposes, and reproduces the terma uponwhich the Board agreed to relinquish their claim to the land reclaimed by the sea, and required for railway purposes, and summarises the Act authorising the Board to borrow.

The balance sheet attached, shows that the cash revenue for the year from all sources, was £7609 Is 10d,the revenue for 1882, including interest, is estimated to be at least £7OOO. Of the receipts last year, the chief items , were £3500 from profits of the Landing Service, and £869 12s from the Harbor Master’s department, for fees, port charges, berthage, use of hawsers, &c., and £3201 8a 4d for interest on fixed deposits. The total expenditure exclusive of the Lahding Service account, was £33,249 19s 3d, of ; which the chief items were as follows: Breakwater, £22,509 16s 7d, including £13,713 2s lid for cement and charges thereon; wharf, £8422 3s Id; plant, including £1565 8s lid for the Priestman dredger, £1754 4s 6d; Harbor Master’s department including £548 8s 9d for anchors, buoys, and other mooring appliances, £1067 le 9d; salaries and expenses, £1544 Is 4d. The assets were £32,087 19s in money ; cement, £5911 loa worth, plant, £7200 ; buildings and furniture, £llsO ; landed property, Hot yet'defined ; and last but not least, estimated value of the Breakwater and wharf, £90,000. The profit on the year’s working of the Landing Service was £3037 3a 3d.
