THE CHRISTCHURCH EXHIBITION.

At a meeting of the Timara Chamber of Commerce yesterday, Mr Bird, Chairman of the Christchurch Chamber, endeavored to interest the members in the forthcoming Exhibition at Christchurch, and succeeded in doing so. It was resolved to request the Harbor Board to have a plan of the harbor works prepared for the, Exhibition. Messrs Woollcombo, Hall, and Granger were appointed a Committee for the purpose of taking charge of local exhibits and forwarding them, and they were authorised to take such steps as seemed advisable, including a personal canvas of the neighborhood, to obtain as many exhibits as possible. Mr Gibson sngSested that some good specimens of ressed stone oonld be supplied from this district, and that the_ school children might contribute specimens of their handiwork. The Secretary was instructed to send circulars to the schools in the (pursuance of the latter suggestion. The exhibition promises to exceed the most sanguine expectations of the promoters. 26 bays were originally set apart for British exhibitors, but 40 have already been applied for, exclusive of machinery stands, and more applications are expected. The foreign courts are looking up well. Switzerland will occupy more space than at Sydney, and its agent has special instructions to report upon the capabilities of New Zealand as a field for Swiss emigration. Italy, Austria, and Japan will make a fine show, the latter being expected to be one of the sights of the Exhibition, and India will be represented.
