CRICKET.
ENGLISH ELEVEN V. AUOfc LAND TWENTY-TWO This match was continued, on Saturday On Thursday the Aucklanders, got 122 in their first innings. On Friday the Englishmen went in and scored 166 for four wickets; they resumed on Saturday and by lunch time were all out for a total of 214. The Auckland team then went in-for their second inn-, ings, and in a short time were disposed, of for 94. Of this total 31 were credited to Dewes, who played the best cricket, ever witnessed against Shaw’s team in New Zealand. His score consisted of! three 4’s, two 3’s, four 2’s, and singles totalling 31, made without a chance. The Englishmen had only 3 runs to get to win, but it was arranged that they should play to time and in. the hour and ten minutes till stumps were drawn they ran up 90 for five wickets. CANTERBURY V. OTAGO. In this match Otago went first to the wicket on Friday, and scored 153, and in the afternoon Canterbury ran up 43 with the loss of six wickets. On Saturday the Canterbury team concluded their first innings, obtaining a total of 91. Otago then went in, for their second innings and were all disposed, of for 93. The Canterbury men commenced their second innings at 20 minutes to drawing time, and when time was called had lost three wickets for only two runs. THIS DAY Play was resiimed at 12.15. When the score Reached 9 Reeves had the misfortune, in playing one from W. Frith, to hit his wicket. He had made 4. : At 1 o’clock the score was 20, Ashby and Watson playing carefully. 2.40 p.m. ; ■ At 24, W. Frith bowled Watson with a regular trimmer. The out-goer played very patiently during his three-quarters of an hour at the wickets to-day-Ashby is bitting out very hard at Frith, off whom he has made some prett y drives. At 33 Wilding played Cook e on to his. wicket. At 40 Frith .clean bowled Cotterill, who contributed tw'o singles. At 62 C. Frith relieved Cooke, both men playing with vigor and;getting i runs very fast. Some of Ashby’sdrives are particularly hard and clean. The fielding is good all round. At 70,. when it wanted but a minute of the lunchadjournment, C., Frith clean bowled Ashby, who had played a grand innings for 30
