At the Resident Magistrate’s Court to-day, James Fowler was charged on remand with the abduction of Lucy Mary Swan, the adopted child of Ruth and Mitchell Haines, of Alford Forest. The case excited u great deal of interest. The girl has been living with her adopted parents since she a fortnight old, and she ran off with Fowler on the day of the Methven sports. Haines had not seen her until in Court to-day. The case was ultimately adjourned for a quarter of an hour to give the parties time to come to an amicable arrange ment, when Fowler, promising to marry the girl at once, was remanded for 8 days and liberated on his own recognisance of £25. If at the end of eight days he produces proof of marriage he is to be discharged. The girl is not yet fifteen years of age.
