A THREATENING LETTER.

The following is one of the threatening letters sent by the ex-convict Plummer to Dr Philaon of Auckland:—

Auckland, 9/10/18. Sir, Either knowingly, or through sheer neglect, you completely blasted four years of my life. Had not a friend with means turned up, I should hare been in my grave long ago, or, what is worse, -a helpless lump of humanity. Now, Sir, I have saved enough money to ; bring me from Australia, and enough to keep me for a time till I can have satisfaction and revenge ; for not all the religion in the world will I allow to persuade me to forget and forgive such a wrong as mine has been. Were I to ( call upon you and ask for some } jolt/ return of course you would excuse yourself in lome gentlemanly way, and tty) -law will not help me. For years X have been looking forward to this day. Bht I will, not waste no more words—here are., my terms.; I was saying £1 a-week, and that would haye continued—four, years, at £1 a-week; is £2OB and £3O for. travelling expenses and loss of time, make £238. I can put no price on pain and suffering.but if I could make you suffer what : I have suffered, I could find the heart to doit. You were quite prepard to see me in my grave, and if yon can be' a party to murder, so can I. Listen: You will leave your house on horseback to morrow (Monday) night nt nine o’clock (town time) with £23B.in gold upon you, and this letter enclosed with it; ride at a steady walking pace up the Grafton, down Khyber Pass road, through Newmarket, and on towards the Harp of Erin, till called upon to stop and .deliver the money. You -.will insert a final answer to; this letter in tbmorrow’s “ Evening Star,” in this form, “ Personal, Yes, ABO,” that is, if you are prepared to meet my demands ;;if not, send this advertisement, “ Personal, No. ABO.” If the last advertisement’is sent, or if neither appears, P will try and teach you to believe that I am in earnest by sending one of yonr family to his or her grave, and then write to you again. I have come here for money or life, and one or both I will have.”—(Signed) Revenge.
