With any ink usually employed in writing, reduced from ten volumes to six, and to which four volumes of glycerine have afterward been added, Professor Alt field lias been ’ able to obtain transcripts of manuscripts in an ordinary thin paper copying book without the use of a press. When a sheet of paper is written over with this ink, it is placed upon ope of the sheets of the book, and then a piece of blotting paper laid over the thin paper, lakes np, when pressed in the common way, any excess of ink which may come through. A pleasure party at Sydney had an extraordinary escape from death by lightning, on Dec. 29. The party included Mr W. L. Montefiore, Signor Ferrarini, the Italian artist, his wife, and Mr Marsden. They were on a visit to the Blue Mountains, and when near Mitchell’s Causeway were about to enter their buggy, when a blinding flash of lightning prostrated three of them. One of the horses was killed instantaneously, an 1 the. other was knocked down. Mr Montefiore was the only one ,of the party who escaped unhurt. Signor Ferrarini felt ; the electric shock on his left side, and Signora Ferrarini on her right side, Mr Marsden’s left arm was temporarily paralysed. The party were subsequently enabled to travel as fdr as Blackbeath. .
