OFFENCES.
W. Rickards was yesterday committed for trial at New Plymouth for stealing a mare belonging to Edward Stockman. At the Wellington Court yesterday Robert Hickling was committed for trial on a charge of indecently assaulting a child. * ' Plummer was yesterday sentenced at Auckland to seven years for sending threatening letters, and to three years additional for housebreaking. William Rippiey, of Cambridge, was fined £SO for libel on Victor Granville, and ordered to be imprisoned till the fine was paid. James Simpson, a school teacher,, charged with libelling James Reid, postmaster at Awanui, by charging him with opening letters, apologised, and was fined £1 and imprisoned till the rising of the Court. Edward Haylock; publican, of Kawhaka, was charged at the Resident Magistrate’s Court at Kumara, yesterday, with shooting with intent at Andrew Curie, a sheep drover, of Papanui, at Harris’ accommodation house, Christchurch road, on Monday last. From questions put by accused to prosecutor, the cause is attributable to imputed improper intimacy with one of accused’s daughters. The case was adjourned till Friday for the production of further evidence. Accused was allowed bail, himself in £2OO and two sureties in £IOO each.
