NEWS OF THE DAY.
Captain Sutter addressed a meeting of the electors of Gladstone at Mr Moody's house at Kingsdown last evening, over twenty electors attending the meeting. Captain Sutter spoke,for an hour and a half and received an unanimous vote of thanks and confidence at the close of his address.
We observe that Mr D. McGuinness, the enterprising proprietor of the Ship Hotel, has made further extensive alterations and improvements to the “ Ship.” A new dining and luncheon room has been fitted up and opened in the Strathallan street side of the building, and a number of other improvements which we shall notice fuller in a future issue, have been made.
A correspondent informs us that Mr David Anderson met with a cordial reception at Fairlie Creek on Friday last, on his meeting the electors at that place in the schoolroom, and was accorded an unanimous vote of thanks.
Messrs G. Butler, Pleasant Point; J. Talbot, Temuka ; JR. B. Walcot, Timaru ; and Dr Foster, Geraldine, have been nominated to fill the seat on the Board of Education rendered vacant by the resignation of Mr Howell. The election will be made at the next meeting of the Board on the 19th inst.
Henry Beveridge Mclntosh, lately manager of the Walton Park Coal Company, was committed for trial at Dunedin on two charges of embezzlement, and other charges are pending. The Customs officers at Dunedin yesterday, seized some goods on the wharf in regard to which it is alleged the owners gave an under-estimate of their value.
Mr Godso, a contractor, was drowned yesterday by falling off the railway bridge crossing a portion of the harbor at Pelichet Bay, Dunedin.
A large meeting of miners was held at Kumara on Saturday to urge on the Government the necessity of at once constructing the second Eapitea dam, for which money was voted last Parliament. The quantity of water at present available is quite inadequate to the demand. A tender for a new public hall for theatrical and other purposes at Christchurch, was accepted on Saturday. The amount is £BOOO.
The Christchurch Jockey Club yesterday fixed the Autumn Meeting for April 10th and 11th, nominations for February 4th. A proposition was made to alter the name of the C.J.C. Handicap to the New Zealand Cup, but it was not approved.
The usual weekly session of the English Lodge Victory, No. 42,1.0.G.T., was held last evening at the Foresters’ Hall. Bro. Thomas Tichbon, P.W.C.T., occupied the chair. There was a good attendance of members present and matters of great im. portance were fully discussed. For the office of Grand Lodge Representative at its session in January next to be held at New Plymouth, Bro. Thomas Tichbon, P.W.C.T., was elected, and for the offices of Special and Lodge Deputies, Bro. Edward Jones, W.C.T., was re-nominated for the former office, and Bro. W. C. Silverton, P.W.C.T., for the latter. A Committee was appointed to report at the next meeting as to the best means of celebrating the second of the Lodge on January 9, After indulging a short time in harmony the Lodge closed at 9.80 p.m.
