A woman named Bridget Payne was yesterday committed for trial at Christchurch for setting fire to the house of a neighbor against whom, she entertained ill feeling. Daring the absence of the owner the house was set on tire, kerosene being used. The damage done was not great.
The Christchurch Chaßober of Commerce have nominated Messrs F, E, Wright, Beaumont, and C. Whituford, as a commission to report npon the practicability of the East and West Coast railway.
Mr W. J. Newton’s programme of addresses to the electors of Gladstone has been slightly altered, as reference to his advertisement will show.

The ship Loch Cree, which' left Lyttelton on August 31, has arrived at Dunkirk, and the Crusader, from Port Chalmers on Sept 14, at London.
The Auckland City School Committee refuse to permit children to be vaccinated at their schools, and parents do not approve of it, as they kept their children at home in consequence of a rumor that they would be vaccinated.
The police at Dunedin took down the names of several persons who were caught gambling at the late races, but as they desisted on being warned, it is not intended to prosecute them, A man named La Perelle committed suicide at Arrowtown on Thursday in a novel but shocking manner. He set fire to an out-house and then covered himself with sacks inside, and was burned, being probably suffocated first. The steamer Europa, from Melbourne on Nov 2, arrived at Qalle on the 22nd, with a cargo of mutton and butter, all in excellent condition. The refrigerating machinery was made in Melbourne.
At the eleventh hour a candidate has been found to contest the Premier’s seat for Selwyn. in the person of Mr J. Lockhead, a resident in the district and a farmer. At the nomination yesterday the show of hands was in his favor.
Mr R. Olephane, a prominent politician at Cristchurch, was caught in a trap of his own making at the nomination for Stanmore yesterday. He nominated himself, in order to be able to speak, and when he wished to retire his seconder refused to consent to it. The others nominated for Stanmore are Messrs Cowlishaw, Pilliett, and Flesher.
We remind boating men that the time for receiving entries for the Akaroa Regatta on the Anniversary day terminates on Dec. 14, The complete rules and regulations under which the events will be contested may be seen at this office by anyone desiring information. We have been shown the Cup given by Mr D. McGuinnesa of the Ship Hotel, to the Timaru A. and P. Association, as a private prize for the best Cavalry charger exhibited at the late Show, It [is a very handsome silver pint cup, manufactured by Messrs B, Petersen and Co., of Christchurch. The value of the prize offered by Mr McGuinness was £5 6s, but as a member of the Timaru troop, C.Y.C. (Captain A. W. Wright) won it, Mr McGuinness purchased a cup value £lO 10s. The cup has the following inscription neatly engraved upon it—“ Special prize given by Q.M. Sergeant-Major McGuinness, C.Y.C. for the best Cavalry charger at the Timaru Agricultural and Pastoral Show, October 26, 1881. Awarded to Captain A. W. Wright. B troop, C.Y.C. A meeting of the District Orange Lodge No 1 was held at Waimate yesterday afternoon, Bro. E. J. Atwill, D.M., presiding. Bros. A. Mills,!. Reid, and J. Finlay, from the TimaruLodge,were among those present. The minutes of last meeting were read, but several items were struck out before confirmation. The decision of the Timaru Lodge concerning election of officers was confirmed. It was resolved to hold the next district meeting at Timaru in March. £6 15s was collected during the evening.
