are being constructed for the Victorian railways. A boardinghouse keeper named Bruno was fined £lO, or two months, for crimping seamen. The Union Bank demand retractation and an apology from the “ Age ” newspaper for the recent statement alleging irregularities in the bank. A test action will shortly be commenced to ascertain the legality of using the totalisator on race courses.
QUEENSLAND. Mr Griffiths, leader of the Opposition? denounced the Government for sending to India for Coolie labor without the consent of Parliament, and maintained that the transcontinental railway was a scheme to place twenty million acres of land in the hands of a big corporation. The Government is procuring a powerful diamond drill, with which they intend to thoroughly prospect the western district fpr water, Messrs Money Wigram’s steamer Durham is being chartered by Government for the conveyance of 400 immigrants to Queensland. WESTERN AUSTRALIA. The Intercolonial Exhibition was opened on Nov 22 by Governor Robinson. A cantata was performed by the choir and Austrian Band. The Governor with Lady Robinson, went through the building,- xamined a number of exhibits, and accepted medals for the Queen and Governors, specially struck in honour of the occasion.
